The southern Italian region of Campania has a checkered history. Over time, Campania and its capital Naples was dominated by the Spaniards, Austrians and French. The oppressed farmers could rarely afford meat and fish, so the finished flatbread called Pizza, became popular.
A pizza that corresponds to today's standards, was reportedly first produced in Naples by the pizzaiolo Raffaele Esposito on 11 June 1889 by the Pizzeria Brandi, said to have been commissioned to serve King Umberto I and his wife Margherita a pizza. This he is said to have done in a patriotic way by using ingredients in the Italian national colors: green basil, white mozzarella and red tomatoes.
